In English class we will be concentrating on the basics of grammar and writing. Our research project will center on the Wonders of the World, both modern and ancient. Vocabulary will once again be a focus. Can you guess which country we are going to highlight first? Literature in the eighth grade will feature Edgar Allen Poe, Ray Bradbury, Jack London, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the winter months, we will read the novel, Johnny Tremain. April is poetry month, and we will celebrate that by reading a variety of poems by a myriad of poets. Also, plan on writing a few of your own. This new beginning promises to be quite an adventure. Let’s
enjoy it together. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I would like to welcome everyone to a new school year. I look forward to meeting everyone and an interesting and busy year. I will be teaching both seventh and eighth grade Social Studies. Seventh Grade Our text is Glencoe’s Journey Across Time the early ages. We begin the year studying the Paleolithic and Neolithic peoples and the change from the nomadic hunter gatherers to the beginnings of agriculture, towns, and cities. From there we will move on to the ancient worlds of Egypt, Israel, Greece, India, and China. We will cover a large amount of material and vast periods of time. Come prepared and ready to take lots of notes. Eighth Grade Our text is Glencoe’s United States Government Democracy in Action. We will start the year learning about the types of government and economic theory. The focus will then shift to American government and the changes that took place from the colonial period through to the creation of the Constitution. We will learn about the three branches of American government and the freedoms and rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution. Since we are also approaching a presidential election year, we will spend time following the various candidates and the road to the presidency. We will move at a quick pace so come to class prepared and ready to take lots of notes.
